I have a folder of "painting ideas" on my computer, and this painting comes from one of those photos. This was a really spontaneous painting, and finished rather quickly. I often do these small, quick-type paintings between really tedious, complicated subjects. I love how this one turned out.

This original oil painting painting is based on a photo I took at the arboretum on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The photo was taken in the evening as the sun was setting and the light was reflecting off the white-barked sycamore trees in a fascinating way.

This is my second water lily painting. I really like this subject. The rather odd color of the water is a reflection of the gray sky the day the original photo was taken.
The background for this painting was originally black, but I decided that it looked too flat. I outlined the flower in teal blue and faded that to black instead. I think the contrast of the teal outline and magenta in the petals highlights the flower better. Plus, there is a feeling of depth in the painting now.
Some of my newer paintings are being shown at The Art Vault Gallery in Paxton, Illinois! The grand opening of this new gallery is November 6, from 7-9pm. The address is 106 S. Market St. Come check it out!
Also, I am happy to take commissions for paintings. If you have a photo you would like me to paint, send me a message or leave a comment! Email me: audraziegel at gmail dot com
