Below are sneak peak photos of the brushwork up close. These paintings are "recreations" of paintings I have done in the past (can you guess which ones?). My intention is never to replicate a painting stroke by stroke, but to create a unique and original work of art using a similar composition and color scheme. These paintings are also a slightly larger size than the originals which lends them an extra bit of detail (the brush strokes are relatively smaller compared to the size of the canvas). Fun fact, no matter what size of canvas I paint, I typically use the same size paint brush to complete the majority of the brushwork! I plan to upload photos of the complete paintings after these ship to their new owner in June or July. Stay tuned!<br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Commission #1:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> <br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0fBVliJWOBHPOPQCLBTo4mKtWbVII_sMNSI_qDuGqtgF2MorVqqhU6Qi7tFf-qA0Uze8ONnMPc0iT3-MGmuVzCXcMep7b-Yi0JOnMqlzoZ-4aPc1p81lmAsiIZC23Bstx9Kcma5ftwMo/s2048/IMG_3882.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0fBVliJWOBHPOPQCLBTo4mKtWbVII_sMNSI_qDuGqtgF2MorVqqhU6Qi7tFf-qA0Uze8ONnMPc0iT3-MGmuVzCXcMep7b-Yi0JOnMqlzoZ-4aPc1p81lmAsiIZC23Bstx9Kcma5ftwMo/w640-h426/IMG_3882.JPG" width="640" /></a></div></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnlW2CbZgsjT5dBWe8HZCLm8Nh06UfGTBt2rJmgv8IOP0pjDOc6V9EuMhqFySzfsby-WByz_G4mvFutw9BT1oLjvf1AaDh6VWswvxtmh4Gp4H8sGIPced4ZTIFgjtybaxnhMCRitse5MU/s2048/IMG_3910.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnlW2CbZgsjT5dBWe8HZCLm8Nh06UfGTBt2rJmgv8IOP0pjDOc6V9EuMhqFySzfsby-WByz_G4mvFutw9BT1oLjvf1AaDh6VWswvxtmh4Gp4H8sGIPced4ZTIFgjtybaxnhMCRitse5MU/w640-h426/IMG_3910.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><p></p><p> </p><p>Commission #2:</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcfzOjXs1rQ9jQ-thwh4zvLls2JquXlVJFuDhf6a5LIrpuS4YBoFEOIuVcpTH_OelPMsYmnyNHknHZmgoPM0dbHvdNz3jV_iu_h3j09DZsWBkf9X_834l_AGqAwkQ8R4VwBuKXfur65NE/s2048/IMG_3920.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcfzOjXs1rQ9jQ-thwh4zvLls2JquXlVJFuDhf6a5LIrpuS4YBoFEOIuVcpTH_OelPMsYmnyNHknHZmgoPM0dbHvdNz3jV_iu_h3j09DZsWBkf9X_834l_AGqAwkQ8R4VwBuKXfur65NE/w640-h426/IMG_3920.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBE80uyqtgUS1VllmDyADJJiBvp00TELGs4FTIsDN9CcRVsQbye5GceEv_W4y-XIYWMRNRfij-nhAmLT5ft2LP8A27omi77CRsuVbjKRmw7IoXh35hdE78MUjmVcNdF7_83NXu0IgIpZo/s2048/IMG_3924.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBE80uyqtgUS1VllmDyADJJiBvp00TELGs4FTIsDN9CcRVsQbye5GceEv_W4y-XIYWMRNRfij-nhAmLT5ft2LP8A27omi77CRsuVbjKRmw7IoXh35hdE78MUjmVcNdF7_83NXu0IgIpZo/w640-h426/IMG_3924.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>Audra Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04556624654986542731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8441394654659226380.post-33466339612322043572021-03-09T19:19:00.001-06:002021-03-09T19:21:54.054-06:00Apple Orchard II (2021), 9 x 10"<p> A few months ago a client contacted me to commission a reproduction of a former painting of mine. My <a href="https://audraziegel.blogspot.com/2010/08/apple-orchard-2010-8-x-10.html">original Apple Orchard painting</a> is a perennial favorite. Often when people reach out to me to comment on my work, they mention the Apple Orchard painting. So, when my latest clients wanted me to recreate this painting, I was thrilled to "return" to the orchard, so to speak. It was a pleasure to revisit this beloved place and to paint it again with fresh eyes. Any time a client wants me to recreate a former painting, I always tell them that while I will do my best to capture the composition and colors of the original painting, each painting is it's own unique artwork. So, it wasn't my intention to recreate the original stroke by stroke, but instead capture the essence or the feeling of the original while creating something unique and one-of-a-kind. Here it is!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicfiwArnX4yOJvo6V6ot-1s2493UEByswytSfn0pobDaLK9eDY9415uwHfgXonusXK9o5hx_wZwF6OfMY-gFRSgYVw_rn2DS6FXshiLzgtQBG4r3TAJ2V0moyRxvFmu8J6zAR06h4I12g/s2048/Apple+Orchard+II.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1843" data-original-width="2048" height="576" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicfiwArnX4yOJvo6V6ot-1s2493UEByswytSfn0pobDaLK9eDY9415uwHfgXonusXK9o5hx_wZwF6OfMY-gFRSgYVw_rn2DS6FXshiLzgtQBG4r3TAJ2V0moyRxvFmu8J6zAR06h4I12g/w640-h576/Apple+Orchard+II.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p></p><p>For close-up photos of this work, see my <a href="https://audraziegel.blogspot.com/2021/02/another-commission-painting-sneak-peek.html">previous post</a>. <br /></p><p><br /></p>Audra Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04556624654986542731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8441394654659226380.post-84706533042694064652021-02-09T21:00:00.001-06:002021-02-14T11:19:38.687-06:00Another Commission Painting Sneak Peek!<p>This past January I completed my latest commission for a client. This was a fun project for me--I revisited the subject of an older painting and got to expand on it just a little with a new canvas size. I will wait to post a full photo until the new owners take it home, but for now here are some close-ups of the brushwork and texture.<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgst4TiFr7-_Ex9skr71pNFtJzCpH_Ce9n3lswG2VlRgyqy05sNjEhvTQ_C1y449G8zKM2Y3Fm6WU_qKLn1L7R550Cao1xJZciaGPNqI2ZIv1lyUMQEwLELt9zHXtDl_Lm0exMgPuKnrnQ/s2048/IMG_3693.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgst4TiFr7-_Ex9skr71pNFtJzCpH_Ce9n3lswG2VlRgyqy05sNjEhvTQ_C1y449G8zKM2Y3Fm6WU_qKLn1L7R550Cao1xJZciaGPNqI2ZIv1lyUMQEwLELt9zHXtDl_Lm0exMgPuKnrnQ/w640-h426/IMG_3693.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFOtengCUlkFvDTtBIE2CR2c7qHMRb8Tb163HXf2YVOjAh47ze4EHQqweyxE_zXy1a7K_HvJZBJZKmcdIbVKlM-QMG0CR3Fg4kIXB6sdE1pkGNVrZDiMIsj63npYk_RIzymykj5wd5uKw/s2048/IMG_3695.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFOtengCUlkFvDTtBIE2CR2c7qHMRb8Tb163HXf2YVOjAh47ze4EHQqweyxE_zXy1a7K_HvJZBJZKmcdIbVKlM-QMG0CR3Fg4kIXB6sdE1pkGNVrZDiMIsj63npYk_RIzymykj5wd5uKw/w640-h426/IMG_3695.JPG" width="640" /></a></div></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg41-338hzPAp8O92h_X7sIMNXpXlICtX8gEO8XjdOlVtrZWIdg9bJDcYHBb__3bmkN_1JFC6ccvRtMdVS_dtSTNsj0igudKn3YmE5YzI7Wm4ehdcWMfZURU8zOgX5pe-ng7DCAA1Yu8h4/s2048/IMG_3697.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg41-338hzPAp8O92h_X7sIMNXpXlICtX8gEO8XjdOlVtrZWIdg9bJDcYHBb__3bmkN_1JFC6ccvRtMdVS_dtSTNsj0igudKn3YmE5YzI7Wm4ehdcWMfZURU8zOgX5pe-ng7DCAA1Yu8h4/w640-h426/IMG_3697.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />Audra Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04556624654986542731noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8441394654659226380.post-4638239275554378692020-02-17T15:28:00.000-06:002020-02-17T15:36:59.126-06:00Daisy (2020), 8 x 8 in.Some of my favorite projects are pet portraits. This one was especially
sentimental to me. My friend recently lost her sweet bulldog, Daisy.
This portrait of Daisy commemorates her delightful spirit and dedicated
companionship.<br />

It's uninteresting, lacks vibrancy, and even though I revised the background once before, it just never felt right. So, I set it aside for a long time...several years...(um, maybe six years...). Just last week I finally felt inspired to try some new revisions, and here's the result: </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think I love it! It's lively, vibrant, full of movement and life, and slightly abstract. I deepened the shadows and added more defined petals on some of the flowers. I like how it's not clear where the actual flowers end and the background begins. It feels more like one of my paintings now, full of texture and saturated colors.</div>

Here is the finished painting! You may have recognized this painting as <a href="http://audraziegel.blogspot.com/2010/07/bluebell-forest-2010-8-x-10.html" target="_blank">similar to one I completed in the past</a>. The clients who commissioned this painting fell in love with a bluebell forest painting I completed in 2010. They, however, wanted theirs to be much larger in size. The final painting has a bit more detail than the original, but contains the same composition and color scheme. Because of it's large size, I did more layering of the paint than with the original painting, which was only 8 x 10 in. and completed in a single sitting. In order to make sure I covered the entire canvas with paint, and no white showed through, I painted an underlayer over the whole canvas and then added a second layer where I applied the paint in thick textural daubs.Audra Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04556624654986542731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8441394654659226380.post-57699448890558325102017-07-05T16:07:00.002-05:002017-07-14T12:41:56.922-05:00New Commission Painting Sneak Peek!Here's a sneak peek of a new commission I am working on. For some reason, the colors in painting were exceptionally difficult to capture accurately with my camera. After a bit of Photoshop editing, this is pretty close. I have to say I am pretty fond of this new painting. I tried out a new technique which involves a bright reddish underlayer. This underlayer shows through between the daubs of paint and gives it a luminous, glowing quality. I am also very fond of these particular willow trees. One of them was previously featured in <a href="http://audraziegel.blogspot.com/2015/11/summer-at-lily-pons-2015-10-x-14-in.html">my other painting of Lilypons</a>.<br />

Secolari held an artist reception in June where I sold one original painting and one framed print! I sold another framed print back in April as well. I am very pleased with how the display turned out and look forward to meeting more art lovers at future receptions. <a href="https://www.secolarievoo.com/">Secolari </a>sells artisanal flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegars as well as spices, honey, and pasta. Secolari has three Maryland locations and one Washington, DC location, all which feature local artists as well as the oils, vinegars, and spices. Check it out if you are ever in the area!</div>

Willow trees and waterlilies in the same painting! <a href="http://www.lilypons.com/" target="_blank">Lily Pons</a>, located outside Frederick, Maryland is a magical place, with dozens of varieties of water lilies and lotus flowers for sale. You don't have to be in the market for water lilies, however, to visit the grounds, see the massive lily ponds and enjoy the gardens. Lily Pons is a lovely location...I predict many more paintings to come of this special place!</div>

This painting is based on a photo taken by my sister while on vacation in Russia! Russia is, apparently, covered in the most luscious, magical looking birch forests, and lots of Russian folk art features birch trees. I am in love with their white stripey bark and tall, straight trunks. I love painting trees and redwoods have an unmatched magnificence. I visited a redwood forest once as a child and can imagine walking along this path with the redwoods towering overhead, the sunlight gently filtering to the forest floor. I painted this as a commission and am so glad to have had the opportunity to capture these lovely trees in my own style!Audra Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04556624654986542731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8441394654659226380.post-72717558879091118032014-12-01T07:48:00.002-06:002016-08-20T21:38:15.809-05:00Cyber Monday Sale!Now through December 5th get 10% off all prints and paintings at<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/AudrasOilPaintings" target="_blank"> my Etsy shop</a> with code holiday10. Several years ago, one of my favorite paintings, Hillside with Wildflowers (above), was stolen from an exhibit of my work. Somehow, the fact that this painting was stolen by someone I don't know feels different to me than paintings of mine that are purchased by strangers. I miss this one so much more, not knowing where it is. But, all is not lost, because I scanned this painting before putting it on display. Since I have a digital scan of this painting, I can now print it on my new Epson R3000 printer! The result is absolutely stunning--a virtually perfect replica of the original, minus the texture of the oil paint, of course. However, the lovely watercolor paper I use for my prints produces the colors and brushstrokes so wonderfully, it gives the illusion of texture. This print is one of almost 60 prints available at my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/AudrasOilPaintings" target="_blank">Etsy store</a>. Hillside with Wildflowers, is available <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/210576567/giclee-print-hillside-with-wildflowers-5?ref=shop_home_active_11" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

May Apple and Trillium are two of my favorite mid-western woodland
wildflowers. I love how demure and unassuming they both are, and how
you have to get down on their level to appreciate them. This is
especially true in the case of the may apple which is usually hidden by
an umbrella-like canopy of two giant leaves. Prints of this painting are available at my Etsy shop <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/210579314/may-apple-and-trillium-8-x-10-in-giclee?ref=shop_home_active_15">here</a>.Audra Ziegelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04556624654986542731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8441394654659226380.post-82041551478270490822013-08-23T13:21:00.002-05:002013-08-23T13:21:51.192-05:00My Billboard and MeHere are a couple more pictures of my billboard in Urbana, Illinois...and me. :-) It was stunningly enormous when I was standing right under it!
